The Morel Mushroom

Wildfires can happen anywhere and at any time. As much as we try, we can’t always prevent them, and the destruction caused can cost thousands of dollars. However, destruction is sometimes nature’s way of paving the way for new creation.
Such is the case with The morel mushroom, a mushroom sought after for its earthy, robust flavors, unique appearance, and resistance to domestication. Wherever a fire occurs, morels almost always grow in the same spot the following spring. Luckily for foragers and mushroom enthusiasts alike, 2014 was a year with more wildfires along the west coasts of the US and Canada than almost any other.
With so many fires, it’s expected that the harvest of these “burn morels” could be worth over $100 million. Whether their “blacks”, The morel mushroom that grow earlier in the season, or “greys”, ones that grow later, there is sure to be enough for even an inexperienced forager to make upwards of $500 per day if they’re in the right area.
Because of this, officials in the affected areas are expecting the forests to be filled with non-residents. In some forests, commercial harvesters will have to obtain permits. Environmental impacts on the forests are also of concern, and the harvesters will be directed to use designated camping areas so the vegetation and wildlife can recover.

If you’re the type that prefers scavenging for you food rather than buying fresh morels, there’s a few things you should know. Morels usually start to grow around Mid-may when the soil temperature reaches 45 degrees. However, they grow even better once the soil reaches 55 degrees. Moreover, look for catkins on aspen trees, as the mushrooms tend to appear a week or two later after they do.
Most importantly, make sure you are picking in an area that is both legal and safe. The areas you visit may seem destroyed, but remember, it’s all part of nature’s regeneration cycle. Respect it, an you can experience its “fruits” for many years to come.
