Welcome To Our Mushroom Farm

Whole Earth Harvest began in 1998 outside of a small, rural town in Oregon. When we first began, part of an old barn was turned into a growing room for shiitake mushrooms. Once we got on our feet and established a presence, it wasn’t long before  customers were asking about crimini, portabella and button mushrooms. We started working with another local mushroom farm to meet the demand, but we soon received requests for even more produce. Eventually, we reached out to foragers and other companies to supply us with delicious foods like wild fruit, crisp specialty greens, and prized, foraged mushrooms and truffles.

Our mushroom farm began through the ideas and dreams of Bob and Veronica Nufer and Veronica’s aunt and uncle, Gary and Miriam Larue. Gary dreamed of having a large property for friends and family to gather at while Bob had always wanted to own his own business. After much planning, the vision of both Gary and Bob united, and construction began in 1997. Together, they weathered many challenges and saw the fruition of their dreams. In recent years, Gary and Veronica sadly passed away in 2017 and 2021 respectively and Miriam retired around 2019. Bob remains the primary operator of Whole Earth Harvest and his two oldest sons help manage various departments while his youngest (still in high school) helps maintain the lawn and grounds.  We contribute much of our success to our hardworking employees and occasional help from other family members. Whole Earth Harvest is nestled in the foothills of the Willamette Valley in Yamhill, OR, and we plan to supply our customers with the best specialty produce for years to come.

    1. Thank you for your question DeWayne. Our fresh mushrooms tend to have a shelf life of 2-3 weeks and the dried mushrooms and mushroom powder have a shelf life of about a year. Certain mushrooms you can freeze, but typically the ones that freeze best are the more “meaty” ones such as shiitake, lobster, porcini, and several others. More flimsy mushrooms, such as yellowfoot and black trumpet, will freeze, but the quality tends to not hold up in the frezer. We have not tried freezing the dried mushrooms or mushroom powder, but I would suspect that there would be a potential for them to absorb moisture in the freezer which would cause more harm then good.       While we get them from a local source, the wood ear mushrooms themselves are originally grown in China. Unfortunately we just haven’t found a local grower of Wood Ear mushrooms yet.

    1. Our organic shiitake mushrooms are grown on our farm in Yamhill, Oregon on blocks made of sawdust, wheat bran, water, and rye grain based mycelium spawn. There are many more details involved of course such as block mix ratios, temperature and humidity levels, incubation times, and more that we simply don’t have time to discuss. However, if you are interested in growing your own, you can buy one of our blocks through our website.

      1. I would like to learn what truffles would grow well in N Michigan and learn how to grow them for home use.

        1. Truffles are not able to be cultivated as they require very specific conditions only provided in their natural habitat including their symbiotic relationship with tree roots. This is a big part of why truffles are so prized and so costly – they must be foraged, usually with the assistance of a trained dog. Even if they could be cultivated, we simply do not have the time or resources to offer growing advice on anything except our shiitake grow kits. Thank you for understanding!

  1. Hi,
    i am planning to purchase mushroom growing kits from you but what kind of mushroom can grow at Malaysia weather? Indoor is about 28C. Need your advise

    1. Hello, we only offer growing kits for our shiitake mushrooms at this time, and while they may grow in 28C, that temperature is very high for them and many other mushrooms. This means the mushrooms would probably grow very fast and large, but there would not be very many of them and the quality would not be very good either. Lastly, I sincerely appreciate your interest, but we only ship in the United States at this time.

  2. Recent visit to McMinnville Farmers Market while spending a few days in Portland. Visited your stand and had a wonderful saute of marinated mushrooms so bought 3 varieties to make saute at home. Unfortunately threw away the wonderful marinade recipe so am asking if you could add to your online recipes? Thanks!

    1. Hello Sue, and thank you for reaching out. While Veronica is one of the owners here, she actually runs that booth out of her store, Eleventh Hour Productions and Gift Shoppe, and the booth is not directly connected to us. However, she did provide me the recipe and I will list it here: 1/2 Pound favorite mushroom, 1 cube salted butter (melted), 1 tbsp garlic, 1/4 cup sweet wine, 3/4 tsp curry, 2 tsp sweet basil, 1/4 tsp pepper. Cook over medium heat until mushrooms are tender, approximately 10 minutes. I will try to make an official listing of this on our website soon, but I hope this suffices for now. We hope you enjoy your mushrooms!

    1. Hello Shelly, if you place your order by 8:00am Monday-Friday we will ship it that day. If you place it any time after 8am, we ship it the following business day. The only exception to this is fresh or frozen items that are ordered after 8am Thursday. All of those orders are shipped on Monday unless Saturday delivery was specifically requested so the items don’t sit at the shipping facility over the weekend. As for your order specifically, since it was placed after 8am yesterday we are shipping it today and since you selected priority overnight the order should get to you by 10:30 tomorrow morning.   3. I recently change my eating habits, health reason of course. My friend shared some delicious meals with me but didn’t realized it was all mushroom based. Mainly OYSTER N LOBSTER mushrooms. I plan on cooking in his footstep but my question is. CAN I FREEZE THEM IF SO HOW LONG CAN THE OYSTER AND LOBSTER MUSHROOM BE FROZEN WHILE MAINTAINING THERE FRESHNESS?

  4. Hello I was going to order mushrooms from you but when I went to check out it stated $ 126.64 for shipping. Is there a mistake on your website? I just ordered truffles from a different vendor and the over charge was $ 40.00. Please clarify. I would love to order from you but not at that shipping rate.

    1. Hello, and thank you for your interest. There are no mistakes that I am aware of, however. The shipping charge is calculated based primarily on your distance from us and, to a lesser extent, the weight of what you ordered. The rate is generated by FedEx and is identical to what we pay to ship your order. We know it can be high, but unfortunately we must use the expensive overnight shipping option in order to guarantee the order arrives in good condition. However, we do provide free shipping for our dried items, blocks, grow kits, salts, and oils if you are interested in those.

  5. We will be in the McMinnville area in a couple of weeks. Is there anywhere there we can purchase your lobster mushrooms and truffles? Or can we order and pick up at your farm? We are so excited to have found you!!

  6. You really make it seem really easy along with your presentation however I to find this matter to be really one thing which I believe I might never understand. It kind of feels too complex and extremely huge for me. I am looking ahead to your next publish, I’ll attempt to get the grasp of it!

    1. Hello, all of our cultivated mushrooms, including the oyster, are grown indoors using artificial light. We know that sunlight can increase the nutritional content of some mushrooms, but we are unable to consistently produce mushrooms year-round without the use of artificial light.

    I would like to know what kind of mushrooms are in the blend kind, I am not able to eat Shitake since I am on the Alkaline diet but all the others are okay.

    1. Hello, the blend includes Shiitake, Wood Ear, Porcini, Lobster, Chanterelle, Oyster, Black Trumpet, and Maitake. The shiitake are easily identifiable and can be picked out, but we completely understand why you might not want to do that. Unfortunately, we are unable to make any modification to the blend at this time.

    1. Hello, I unfortunately do not know of any local business that offers truffles directly to the public. Adam Stark is a local forager that occasionally sells on Facebook marketplace and I can vouch for his credibility on identifying Oregon White Truffles if nothing else. I also very occasionally see them at the Portland Farmer’s Market. All that said, it is still very early in the season and I wouldn’t expect to see them anywhere for another few weeks or so.
