Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder
Matcha green tea powder is traditionally used to make a nourishing, full-bodied tea that starts with an acerbic flavor and ends with a lingering sweetness. Matcha is a delicious beverage made from organically-grown green tea leaves that are ground into a powder. This powder is thoroughly mixed into hot water and served without any sweeteners, eliminating the need for a bag.
Directions: It is highly recommended to use a bamboo whisk and the other traditional tools while making matcha for a richer flavor and smoother consistency. First, pour about 2 ounces of boiling water into a cup and let cool to about 180 degrees. While you’re waiting for the water to cool, use a bamboo measuring ladle to put 1 ½ scoops (just over 1 teaspoon) into a strainer and sift into a tea bowl. Pour the now-cooled water into your tea bowl. Using a bamboo whisk, relax your wrist and whisk in a circular motion for smooth tea or a “W” motion for foamy tea. Whisk for 10-15 seconds until bright green. For thick matcha, use 3 ladlefuls and 2 oz of water. Pour half of the water (to avoid clumping) into the bowl and whisk in a circular motion. Pour the remaining water into the bowl and repeat until smooth.
Other Names: Fine powder tea, matcha
Shelf Life: Up to two years in an air tight container. To reduce the loss of flavor, matcha powder should be used as soon as possible if stored through any other means.
Nutritional Facts: Entire leaves are consumed and their antioxidants along with them through this process. Because of this, matcha is a very nutritious drink. In fact, you would have to drink ten cups of green tea in order to receive the same nutrients that just one cup of matcha green tea powder has. Furthermore, it holds 137 times more antioxidants than green tea. Matcha serves as a mood enhancer, concentration aid, detox, and metabolism booster. It also helps prevent disease, lower cholesterol, and is high in fiber.
Tips: Use matcha as a jitter-free alternative to coffee or as an aid in meditation. Aside from its traditional use as a tea, matcha powder blends especially well with dairy products and can be mixed into many desserts, drinks, and more. This includes ice cream, muffins, cakes, protein bars, smoothies and even lemonade. New uses for matcha powder are being invented all the time.
