Description

Ostrich ferns, known locally as fiddleheads, grow wild in wet areas of Northeastern North America in spring. Fresh Fiddleheads are a traditional dish of northern New England (especially Maine) in the United States, and of Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes in Canada. As the love of the fiddlehead continues to spread, we’ve made it a point to find the freshest, local varieties available. Before being frozen, our fiddlehead ferns are picked right out of the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest close to Whole Earth Harvest’s home. These young, just-budding ferns are typically steamed or boiled before being eaten hot with hollandaise sauce, butter and lemon or vinegar or eaten chilled in salad or with mayonnaise.

Frozen fiddlehead ferns contain various vitamins and minerals, as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They are a nutritious source of antioxidants and dietary fiber. They are low in sodium, but rich in potassium, which makes them an ideal food source for people who need a low-sodium diet.
